Wanted: Danckwerts lecturer for 2025

Article by Adam Duckett

NOMINATIONS are open to find a speaker for the prestigious Danckwerts Lecture.

Established in 1985, the lecture recognises leading scholars in chemical engineering. Previous speakers have included Nobel Prize winner Frances Arnold, and IChemE Fellows Max Lu and Nigel Titchener-Hooker.

The lecture will be given in September 2025 in Lisbon, Portugal at the joint conference of the 15th European Congress of Chemical Engineering (ECCE) and 8th European Congress of Applied Biotechnology (ECAB).

The deadline for nominations is 31 January 2025 and the winner will be announced in May. Nominees are expected to have made very strong contributions to research and its application in practice, and to be recognised as an international authority in their field. They will need to give a lecture that is appropriate to the aim and scope of the journal Chemical Engineering Science

The Danckwerts Lecture honours Peter V Danckwerts as a leading scholar in the field of chemical engineering and for his contributions as an executive editor of Chemical Engineering Science. Danckwerts was the second Shell Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge from 1959 to 1977, and a past president of IChemE.

IChemE has been closely associated with the lecture since its creation and has now taken responsibility for hosting the nominations process.

Claudia Flavell-While, IChemE director of Learned Society, said: “The Danckwerts Lecture is the most prestigious academic award in chemical engineering, and the list of previous winners is a who’s who of the profession’s thinkers and researchers. I am delighted that IChemE is able to support the smooth running of the process.”

The lecture is co-sponsored by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE), Chemical Engineering Science, IChemE, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). It is held in Europe as part of the ECCE in odd years and in the US during the AIChE Annual Meeting in even years.
