ICHEME has joined the growing list of supporters of the Technician Commitment, strengthening its push to recognise and develop technicians and process operatives across the chemical and process industries.
The move aligns with IChemE’s strategy to broaden and diversify its membership and to deliver a better experience for everyone working in – or contributing to – the profession. As a Technician Commitment supporter, IChemE says it will focus on improving career development, boosting visibility and recognition of technical roles and ensuring technicians are fully included in conversations about skills, sustainability and the future of the sector.
New membership route for apprentices and vocational learners
Alongside this announcement, IChemE has launched a new membership category for work-based learners, aimed at apprentices and others on vocational training pathways. The category offers a structured route into professional membership, access to tailored learning resources and development tools and a clear progression pathway towards Engineering Technician (EngTech) registration.
The new category provides:
Mirroring IChemE’s student membership, the work-based learner category is free of charge, removing financial barriers for early-career technicians and enabling wider access to the full suite of member benefits.
Rachel Bibby, IChemE’s director of membership experience and knowledge, said: “By recognising the unique needs of technical professionals and widening the benefits of membership, IChemE continues to support the development of a diverse, skilled and resilient engineering workforce – one that is essential for addressing the complex global challenges of today and tomorrow.”
Richard Holliday, senior technician and vocational manager at IChemE, added: “Becoming a supporter of the Technician Commitment publicly demonstrates IChemE’s support for the technical community. This new membership offering is an early example of how we are turning that commitment into action.”
Growing global community
The Technician Commitment now includes more than 140 signatories and supporters worldwide, championing the contribution of technical professionals across higher education, research and industry. The initiative is hosted by the UK Institute of Technical Skills & Strategy.
