IChemE’s spring conferring ceremonies celebrate professional achievement

ICHEME’s recent spring conferring ceremonies across the UK brought together members, volunteers and award winners to celebrate achievement and contribution to the profession.

The ceremonies, held at Glasgow Science Centre, the Royal Armouries in Leeds and Prince Philip House in London, recognised members who had recently achieved Chartered Member (MIChemE) and Fellow (FIChemE) status, as well as recipients of IChemE medals and prizes, and volunteers who have made important contributions to the Institution.

While achieving Chartered or Fellow status results from many years of work and development, the moment itself can pass quietly. The conferring ceremonies were established to give members the opportunity to pause, reflect on their journey and celebrate with the wider profession.

Formal conferrals were led by members of the IChemE presidential team, keynote presentations from IChemE medal recipients, reflections from recently qualified members, and recognition of volunteers whose work underpins many of the Institution’s activities. Representatives from IChemE’s National Early Careers Group also contributed to the ceremonies.

Student ambassadors played a key role in delivering the ceremonies, supporting registration and welcoming guests.

Feedback showed that receiving professional recognition in the presence of family, colleagues and fellow members transformed what had previously been a personal achievement into a shared celebration with the wider profession.

Attendees ranged from student ambassadors taking their first steps as volunteers, through newly Chartered Members and Fellows, to long-standing and retired members who remain actively engaged with the profession.

The conferring ceremonies form part of IChemE’s wider ambition to strengthen professional identity and reinforce the status of chemical engineering by providing members with opportunities to celebrate achievement, build connections and engage with the Institution throughout their careers.

The inaugural conferring ceremonies took place in 2025 and the programme has now become a regular feature of the IChemE calendar. Further ceremonies are planned for this autumn.
