ICHEME’s journal Education for Chemical Engineers (ECE) has been awarded its first ever Impact Factor, allowing insight into its importance. Other IChemE journals saw their Impact Factors rise.
An Impact Factor provides a quantitative measurement of a journal in relation to its competitors. The score is calculated by the number of citations to a journal in the most recent year, as well as the count of articles and reviews published in the journal in the prior two years.
ECE publishes papers from around the world that discuss ongoing changes and developments in chemical engineering education, enabling a global network of chemical engineers with educational expertise to exchange ideas and knowledge.
Published in partnership with Elsevier, the journal has received an Impact Factor of 2.33 and has been included in both the education and scientific disciplines category, and the engineering and chemical category in the sciences citation index expanded (SCIE). Clarivate’s SCIE indexes more than 9,200 of the world’s most influential journals across 178 scientific disciplines. ECE’s important contribution within the education field is reinforced by its quartile 2 (Q2) ranking debut in the education category.
All other IChemE journals saw a rise in their Impact Factors from their 2020 scores, including Sustainable Production and Consumption, which received its second Impact Factor. It saw a huge rise of 37%, from 3.66 to 5.032.
Process Safety and Environmental Protection increased by 24% to 6.158 – up from 4.966. Food and Bioproducts Processing received an Impact Factor of 4.481, a 20% increase from 3.726. Chemical Engineering Research and Design jumped 12%, from 3.35 to 3.739.
Molecular Systems Design and Engineering, co-published with the Royal Society of Chemistry, saw the largest rise of 49% from 3.323 to 4.935.

This not only places the journal firmly in Q2 of education journals as a whole, but also in the top three of engineering education journals. In the current highly competitive climate of academic publishing this is a recognition of the high quality of papers in Education for Chemical Engineers that contribute to developing good practice.
