IChemE opens nominations for refreshed medals and prizes programme

NOMINATIONS are now open for IChemE’s 2027 medals and prizes, with a refreshed portfolio designed to recognise excellence across a broader and more diverse cross-section of the chemical engineering community.

The new portfolio brings IChemE’s 19 medals together under seven themes reflecting the breadth of the profession and the many different ways chemical and process engineers are making an impact: innovation, digitalisation, safety, sustainable systems, learning and development, publications and knowledge sharing, and services to IChemE.

The refreshed programme has been designed to make it easier for people across the chemical engineering community to identify opportunities for recognition and to encourage nominations from a wider range of backgrounds, career stages and working environments, including both industry and academia.

Individuals and teams can be nominated by their peers, with nominations open until 30 November.

The changes follow a review of IChemE’s medals and prizes portfolio to ensure it continues to reflect the evolving profession. Some existing awards have been brought together, while eligibility for others has been broadened to recognise excellence across a wider range of roles and settings.

Among the portfolio is a new IChemE Ambassador Medal celebrates the outstanding contribution of IChemE volunteers and the important role they play in supporting the Institution and its wider community.

Mark Simmons, Chair of the Medals and Prizes Committee, said: “We have reshaped and refocused our portfolio this year in response to the evolving nature of our profession. These changes reflect that we welcome nominations for candidates from early career to established professionals, from a range of roles in industry and academia.

“We must take the time to shine a light on the individuals and teams who are working tirelessly to ensure that our profession is fully equipped to provide effective solutions to the global challenges we are facing as a society.”

The refreshed themes also aim to make the connections between chemical engineering and some of society’s biggest opportunities and challenges more visible, from sustainability and safety to digitalisation, innovation and the sharing of knowledge.

Rachel Bibby, IChemE’s Director of Member Experience and Knowledge, said: “IChemE’s medals and prizes celebrate the extraordinary breadth of contribution made by chemical and process engineers around the world. Our refreshed portfolio gives us an opportunity to recognise excellence in more of the places and forms in which we see it across our profession.

“By organising the medals around seven clear themes and broadening eligibility in key areas, we want the programme to appeal to an even wider and more diverse range of people. Whether someone is at the beginning of their career or is an established professional, works in industry or academia, contributes individually or as part of a team, we want people to be able to see that their achievements, and those of their colleagues, can be recognised.

“I encourage everyone across the chemical engineering community to think about the people and teams doing exceptional work around them and put them forward for recognition.”

The 2027 medals and prizes provide an opportunity to celebrate not only outstanding technical achievement, but also the many different contributions that are helping chemical engineering evolve and deliver positive impact around the world.
