A year on from the launch of IChemE’s Oil, Gas and Energy Transition SIG, chair Steve Flynn reflects on progress, community growth and lessons learned amid the sector’s shift towards net zero
TO SUPPORT IChemE’s oil and gas sector members as the global energy system transitions towards net zero, an Oil, Gas and Energy Transition Special Interest Group (SIG) was launched in October 2024 (see TCE 1,000). A year on, we have an established community of around 3,800 engineers, led by 17 volunteers. Good practices from several IChemE communities have been adopted and we want to continue learning from others’ experiences. So, what have we learned?
IChemE members are generally busy people, so asking for help can be a challenge. However, the project that preceded the SIG’s formation – The Changing Future of the Oil and Gas Industry1 – resonated with many. Over 200 responded to surveys and around 120 shared transition experiences and future needs in five regional workshops. These were insightful, enjoyable and worth repeating.
Grassroots members shared clear views, IChemE leaders backed the direction, and all agreed on setting ambitious goals supported by practical plans.
