CONSULTING and engineering company ÅF Pöyry have been awarded a contract for pre-engineering services by paperboard producer Metsä Board Oyj for a recovery boiler rebuild project in Husum, Sweden.

The project aims to replace two existing old recovery boilers with one new recovery boiler, and to replace the old turbines with one new one. The contract includes pre-engineering services as well as engineering services for the implementation phase of the project. ÅF Pöyry's services include project management, process engineering, and risk management.

The project will depend on the final investment decision (FID) which will take place in Q4 2019 at the earliest. The planned investment would reduce the energy costs of the mill, reduce the time lost during the annual maintenance shutdown, and improve the reliability of production.

Johan Ehrnrooth, Head of Competence Pulp & Paper at ÅF Pöyry, said: “This assignment strengthens the co-operation between Metsä Board and ÅF Pöyry, and we are pleased to be able to support Metsä Board’s competitiveness in pulp and energy production and also in their energy production towards fossil-free production.”
