Rio Tinto launches sustainability label for aluminium industry

Article by Amanda Doyle

RIO Tinto has launched a sustainability label that will ensure transparency and traceability for the aluminium industry.

The label will be like a ‘nutrition label’ for responsible aluminium, allowing customers to make informed choices on the products they purchase. The digital sustainability label, known as START, uses secure blockchain technology. The label will provide information about the production site of the aluminium, and cover ten criteria including carbon footprint, water use, safety performance, and diversity in leadership.

Alf Barrios, Chief Executive of Rio Tinto Aluminium, said: “START is a significant step forward for the aluminium industry as the first offering of this kind, setting a new standard on transparency, traceability and responsible production from mine to market. Our vision is that our customers can showcase the sustainability of the aluminium they purchase from Rio Tinto to their consumers, delivering full value from our responsible production.”

START will also enable Rio Tinto to provide technical expertise through a sustainability advisory service for customers.
