Lack of ambition on reducing Scope 3 emissions criticised
EXXONMOBIL is developing emission-reduction roadmaps for its major facilities and assets to help achieve its newly-announced commitment for its operated assets to be net zero by 2050.
While its commitment has been welcomed, it has also been criticised for its lack of ambition on reducing emissions from the use of its products (scope 3 emissions) which account for the majority of Exxon’s output. In 2020, Exxon’s scope 3 emissions were estimated at 540m t/y while scope 1 and 2 emissions totalled 112m t/y CO2e.
Exxon has outlined its commitments in its Advancing Climate Solutions – 2022 Progress Report. It is aiming to achieve net zero in its scope 1 greenhouse gas (GHG), those emitted from owned and controlled facilities and assets, and scope 2 emissions, which are indirect emissions associated with the purchase of electricity, steam, heat, or cooling.
