IChemE CEO Yvonne Baker: chemical engineers crucial to UK energy success

Article by Yvonne Baker OBE CEng MIChemE

IChemE is set to work even more closely with policymakers following the announcement of a new Energy Independence Bill in the King’s Speech. With the UK government shifting focus toward domestic energy security to counter global volatility, the Institution is keen to ensure technical expertise drives the transition.

“As the detail of the proposed Energy Independence Bill emerges,” said CEO Yvonne Baker, “IChemE will engage constructively with government and industry to help ensure these ambitions are translated into practical, safe and sustainable outcomes.”

From the promised “new era” of British nuclear energy to the scaling of renewables, the government’s plans lean heavily on industrial sectors where chemical engineers lead the way.

“Chemical engineers are fundamental to the development, operation and safety of all forms of energy generation and industrial infrastructure,” Baker noted. “From hydrogen and carbon capture to nuclear energy and low-carbon manufacturing, our profession has a critical role in helping deliver the UK’s future energy system.”
