Webinar: Improving Vacuum Distillation Profitability

Article by Adam Duckett

ON 26 November, The Chemical Engineer hosted a webinar on how mobile refrigeration can be used to enhance the process performance of vacuum distillation in refineries. A recording of this webinar is now available to stream at the link below.

Engineers are invited to join Massimo Capra, a refinery and chemical process engineering expert from Aggreko Process Services. Capra will discuss how engineers and refinery managers can keep plants safe, productive and cost-effective, despite facing turnarounds and aging equipment challenges.

“We will talk about how to apply mobile industrial refrigeration and how it can improve vacuum distillation unit profitability,” says Capra. This includes allowing unit de-bottlenecking, mitigating deteriorated utility conditions, and processing opportunity crudes.

“As an example, in summertime when the cooling water available for the unit increases in temperature, the vacuum unit starts to work out of its design parameter. Through industrial refrigeration applied to the condenser we can keep the unit in line 100% of the time.”

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, engineers are likely to find themselves constrained when it comes to capital expenditure but Capra says now is an opportune time to consider renting such services through operational expenditure. He calls the service “temporary revamps”.

“The refining industry because of Covid-19 has been left with a lack of cash. It is much better to go for opex. It is an extremely flexible, temporary solution.”
