In 2016, a Nature survey of 1,576 researchers found that over 70% of participants had tried and failed to reproduce experiments published by other scientists. More than half those surveyed also confessed to being unable to reproduce their own experiments.

There are many reasons for this, according to Julian Haller, a metrology expert at Sartorius Lab Instruments in Göttingen, Germany, including subpar documentation of experimental procedures. Measurement uncertainty is another significant but often overlooked factor, particularly with respect to weighing.
